In the shadow of Europe’s cities, Roma children grow up in segregation and poverty, struggling to claim a future.
Romania — Childhood on the Margins
Living in isolated villages under some of the harshest conditions in Europe, Roma children face daily obstacles that threaten their access to education, healthcare, and basic human dignity. Segregation, poverty, and racial discrimination make even simple opportunities — a school desk, clean water, or a safe home — far from certain.
Terre des hommes implements long-term programs to address these systemic injustices, promoting access to school, social services, and community support. By recognising the Roma as human beings deserving of fair living conditions, Tdh challenges both entrenched discrimination and the daily barriers that shape childhood.
Through these interventions, the children are not only protected but empowered, offering the fragile possibility of a life defined by potential rather than exclusion.
