In Uttar Pradesh, Sufi shrines range from major pilgrimage sites to smaller, local places of devotion. These shrines are active throughout the year and serve as centres of religious practice for surrounding communities.
Annual gatherings, known as urs, are held to commemorate the death of the saints whose tombs are at the centre of devotion. During these events, pilgrims gather to pray and participate in collective practices associated with the shrine.
At certain sites, practices also include forms of ritual associated with cathartic expression and with mediation in cases where individuals are considered to be affected by spiritual possession.
